SUMMONER SHOWDOWN 2021 UPDATES

Summoner Showdown Finals – The Nodes!

October 28th, 2021

The Final round of the 2021 Summoner Showdown is tomorrow at 9am PT and all three Finalists will be facing a new set of nodes on their fights!

The Finals

  • +100% Attack
  • +500% Health
  • Super-Buffet 2
    • Every 5 seconds the next Precision, Armor Up, Fury, Power Flood, Regen, Cruelty, Resist Physical, Unstoppable, or Unblockable Buff triggered by the Attacker is immediately Nullified and applied to the Defender. Each time this effect triggers, the Defender will Regenerate 10% of their Max Health. Intercepting the Defender refreshes the cooldown and increases future cooldown timers by 1 second(s).
  • Rich get Richer – 2
    • Whichever Champion has more Unique Buffs gains 9% of a bar of Power every 1 seconds.
  • Window of Opportunity – Stun
    • The Defender starts the fight Stun Immune. Whenever they would be Stunned the Attacker is instead Stunned for 4 second(s). The Immunity lasts for 12 second(s), then goes on cooldown for 12 second(s) before returning. When the Immunity returns, it Purifies all Stun Debuffs on the Defender.

Congratulations once again to the Summoner Showdown 2021 Finalists – HappyMcMuffins, Yandaoz, and Fintech! Good luck to each Finalist, and stay tuned for tomorrow when we crown the 2021 Summoner Showdown Champion!

The Semi-Finals – The Who, The What, and the Challenge!

The 2021 Summoner Showdown Semi-Finals are rapidly approaching, and with it, there are some new rules, a new mode, and a video explaining how all of it is going to work.  Before we dive into the details – congratulations once again to our Nine Semi-Finalists!

From the Americas:

  • I’m bleh
  • HappyMcMuffins
  • Werewyrm

From Europe & Russia:

  • Swedeah

From Asia & Oceania:

  • Yandaoz
  • Satsui No Hadou

Now – on to explaining how the Semi-Finals will work!

This year, things will be changed up, and every Semi-Finalist will be expected to bring their best strategic game from the get-go in order to qualify as a Finalist! Only with the best strategy will one of them go on to become the 2021 Summoner Showdown Champion.  Without further ado, let’s dive into how this will work for the Semi-Finalists!

The first thing every Semi-Finalist will have to do is build their deck.  What is their deck?  It is composed of thirty different Champion selections that will be used to determine their Attackers, their Defenders, and their bans over the course of the Semi-Finals.  Champions available as 6-Stars will be available for this year’s competition.

Once each of the Semi-Finalists have built their deck – they move on to the Bans phase.

Each Summoner will ban 3 Champions from their opponent’s deck of 30 Champions – and they will see all of the information available on those Champions.  That includes the full list of Champions, as well as their PI.  (For those who might wonder why that’s important – PI can be an excellent indicator if an opponent is running the Liquid Courage/Double Edge Masteries – further informing their potential bans.)

Both Semi-Finalists will make their bans at the same time, with 60 seconds on the clock, and will not be able to see who each other is banning until that phase is complete.  Once that is done – the Semi-Finalists will move on to the Snake Draft.

Each player will have an opportunity (Semi-Finalist 1 at the beginning and Semi-Finalist 2 at the end) to select one Champion out of 3 in their deck within 30 seconds. For every other round – five random Champions will be pulled from their remaining deck and they must select 2.  They have 60 seconds to make their double picks – if they don’t in the time limit, a Champion will be randomly selected.  These picks will be both Attackers and Defenders for their fight rounds.

One quick thing on the Snake Draft – If you’re having trouble visualizing how the Drafting phase will work, make sure to check out the video at the end of this post – it goes through a full rundown of how the Semi-Finals (and Finals) will work!

Once all of the Champions have been selected by both Semi-Finalists, they move on to the Battle Phase!  The Semi-Finalist who picked first will select their Defender.  After, both of them will select their remaining two Defenders, then move on to selecting their Attackers from the Snake Drafted pool.  There are no duplicates allowed – so every pick will be from a smaller and smaller group of Champions.

After that?  Both Semi-Finalists move on to the Battle Phase!  They will be facing the opponent selected for them, who will also have the following Buff List –

Semi-Finals

  • +100% Attack
  • +500% Health
  • Super-Masochism 2
    • Every 5 seconds the next Stun, Bleed, Poison, Shock, Incinerate, Coldsnap, or Rupture Debuff triggered on the Defender is immediately Purified and applied to the Attacker. Each time this effect triggers, the Defender will Regenerate 10% of their Max Health. Knocking Down the Defender refreshes the cooldown and increases future cooldown timers by 1 second(s).
  • Spite
    • While Attackers have active Buffs, the Defender activates Power Flood out of Spite, granting 18% Power per second and Special Attacks a 100% chance to be Unblockable.
  • Unblockable
    • All Special Attacks are Unblockable.

Similar to Summoner Showdown last year, the Battle phase is a best of 3 – and there is only one fight for each Semi-Finalist per round.  After each round, the score for the fight is shown – and players only need to win 2 out of the 3 rounds to claim victory!

There will be 3 scoring guidelines for the Summoner Showdown Semi-Finals and Finals this year.  Each of these will be totaled to a final score, as follows, by order of importance:

  • Defender HP Removed
  • Time Remaining in Fight
  • Attacker Health Remaining

A few additional notes for the fights going in –

  • No Synergies will be active during the fights
  • Semi-Finalists will have an opportunity to set their Masteries prior to selecting their deck of 30 Champions and they will apply to their Attackers and Defenders
  • Any manually activated pre-fight abilities will be inaccessible.
    • Apocalypse, Guillotine 2099, Human Torch, Jubilee, Magneto (House of X), Mister Fantastic, Odin
  • Any automatically activated pre-fight abilities will trigger by default
    • Invisible Woman, Sorcerer Supreme – Cyttorak’s Ferocity, Spider-Man (Stealth Suit) – Flash Bang Web Cartridges, Storm (Pyramid X) – Ice Tempest

Last but not least – the Prizes for becoming one of three Finalists, as well as the ultimate prizes for the 2021 Summoner Showdown Champion!

Each winner of the Semi-Finals will be eligible to receive their Prize consisting of:

  • 1x 6-Star Generic Awakening Gem
  • 40x Generic 6-Star Signature Stones
  • “Fantastic Finalist” in-game title

The winner of the Finals will be eligible to receive one (1) Prize consisting of:

  • 1x Summoner Showdown Trophy
  • 1x 6-Star Champion of the player’s choice from an expanded limited pool (Please note that the Champion must exist as a 6-Star rarity, be player ownable as of September 30, 2021, or can be a trophy Champion).
  • 1x 6-Star Generic Rank Up Gem (Rank 2 to Rank 3)

Summoner Showdown Qualifier Wrap Up – Congratulations to the Nine Semi-Finalists!

The Summoner Showdown 2021 Qualifiers are finished, and nine Semi-Finalists have emerged from the ashes of Nameless King Groot, Nameless Scarlet Witch, and Nameless Hyperion!

Out of 194,385 total attempts at the Gold Qualifying quests by 30,365 players, nine have reached the ultimate heights of Qualifying for the Summoner Showdown 2021 Semi-Finals!

Congratulations to all nine Semi-Finalists!

From the Americas:

With a mix of new, returning, and familiar names among the list – the Semi-Final matches this year promise to be truly legendary!

But before we can look at what is coming – a look back at the Qualifiers must be taken. (I know all of you were waiting to see if the Qualifiers were completed with Groot once again).

This year’s Summoner Showdown Qualifiers were a bonanza of Champion use – from the brand new Hercules, to the old standby Star-Lord, everyone from Ghost, to Human Torch, to She-Hulk, to Proxima Midnight had their chances in the spotlight! But what about the Champions that were not on the Leaderboard?

Sadly, while there was no Groot this year – there were runs accomplished with Gamora, Green Goblin, and some enterprising soul out there managed a run with an Iron Fist!

Among the top Champions used to beat the Gold quest, She-Hulk, Ghost, and Hercules were the DPS (Damage Per Second) gods. It’s no surprise that the total damage done during the qualifiers is a number almost too long to type out – 1,461,029,786,032 Total Damage!

(That’s in the trillions, by the way)

103,444 Summoners completed the challenge, with an average fight time of 356 seconds (approximately six minutes), making it easy to see just how fast the Semi-Finalists were with their times! The three fastest times?  179 seconds (Week 1), 191 seconds (Week 2), 202 seconds (Week 3).

Suffice to say – the Semi-Finalists were a cut above the rest!

Now that the Qualifiers are complete, and the Semi-Finalists have been selected – it is time for what is next! But what is next, you might be wondering, Summoners.

This year, the Semi-Finals and Finals will be a completely new system.  Expect to see an explanation video (and accompanying blog post, of course!) in the near future, so stay tuned for the next Inside the Contest!

The Final Qualifier Boss Approaches – Nameless Hyperion is Now Live!

August 26th, 2021

The final round of the 2021 Summoner Showdown Qualifiers has begun!  As with the first two Qualifiers, Summoners will have 70 total attempts against the Gold Difficulty Nameless Hyperion with a 5-Star Champion!

This is the last chance for any Summoner hoping to qualify for a chance to be the 2021 Summoner Showdown Champion!

Leaderboard updates will be posted @marvelchampions, with updates to this rolling post over the next few days.

Good luck, swift thumbs, and excellent baiting to all participating in this final Qualifier!

The Final Boss Approaches – Nameless Hyperion

August 25th, 2021

Dragon is a MCoC enthusiast, a freelance writer, and, of course, a dragon

The final round of Qualifiers for the 2021 Summoner Showdown is upon us, and Summoners have one final chance to be the Semi-Finalist for their region.  As we have seen the past few weeks, bringing the right Champion for the job has been paramount, and skill even more so.  That will continue to be the case with the final Qualifying challenge – the Gold Difficulty Nameless Hyperion!

For those taking on the Gold Difficulty Nameless Hyperion, as a reminder, they will also have to meet the following requirements –

  • Complete the fight with a 5-Star Champion
  • Complete the fight within the 10-minute window allowed
  • Achieve the best possible run within seventy attempts

The Buffs

By now, every Summoner hoping to Qualify for the 2021 Summoner Showdown knows that every Champion will arrive with Buffs designed to thwart them and test the limits of their skills and roster.  In order for a Summoner to earn their spot as a Semi-Finalist, they will have to defeat Nameless Hyperion, with the following Buffs:

  • Stun Immunity
    • The Defender is immune to the effects of Stun.
  • Daunting Taunting 2
    • Each time the Attacker reaches a Bar of Power they are inflicted with a Taunt Debuff for 6 seconds. Opponents that are Taunted have their Attack Rating reduced by 40% and have a 70% higher chance to activate a Special Attack.
  • Taunter’s Expertise – 1
    • While the Attacker is under the effects of Taunt their Crit Rating is doubled while launching a Special Attack, Taunt is removed after launching a Special. Additionally, if a Taunt Debuff Expires on the Attacker they are inflicted with a permanent Stifle Debuff lowering their Combat Power Rate by 5% per stack.
  • Lifecycle
    • The Defender is immune to damage from debuffs and has a shield that prevents them from being knocked out. If the sheild is not already disabled, knocking down the Defender disables it for 0.5 seconds. Each time the shield is disabled it’s downtime is increased by 0.5 seconds up to a maximum of 3.5 seconds. Every hit that would knock the Defender out while the shield is active heals 10% of their max health.
  • Special Burst Lock Down – 2
    • Whenever the Defender activates a Special Attack, the Attacker is afflicted with both a Heal Block and an Armor Break Debuff, lasting 10 seconds and reducing Armor Rating by 35%.
  • Shock Vulnerability
    • While the Defender is Shocked, the Attacker’s Attack Rating is increased by 200% when landing an attack.
  • Incinerate Vulnerability
    • While the Defender is Incinerated, the Attacker’s Attack Rating is increased by 200% when landing an attack.
  • Fair is Fair – 2
    • Whenever one of the Defenders Buffs are Nullified the Attacker is Power Locked for 4 seconds

If Summoners are hoping to earn a place as the last Semi-Finalist for their region, they will need to not only take advantage of Nameless Hyperion’s Vulnerabilities, they will need to avoid being Taunted at every turn, and Shock (or Incinerate) their way to victory!  If they are successful, the fastest possible time will earn them a final spot as a Semi-Finalist for the 2021 Summoner Showdown!

Remember Summoners – One Champion.  Ten Minutes.  Seventy attempts.

Which Summoners will be victorious in the last round of the 2021 Summoner Showdown Qualifiers?

Chaos Reigns in the Nameless Scarlet Witch Qualifier!

Salutations and welcome to the second round of the 2021 Summoner Showdown Qualifiers, Summoners!

Two days into the Nameless Scarlet Witch Qualifier – one thing has become abundantly clear.  Oh yes, it’s Ladies Night!  With an ever-changing fight ahead of them, and no two fights ever the same, Summoners faced true Chaos Magic at the hands of Nameless Scarlet Witch.

However, Summoners were able to bring their best game, and best ladies, to the challenge, and emerge victorious!  Congratulations to the Summoners below who have conquered the Queen of Chaos herself to top the Leaderboards –

Day 1 & 2

The Americas – Tryhard Zap with Guillotine 2099

Europe & Russia – Fintech with Ghost

Asia & Oceania – -BR- with She-Hulk

Day 3

The Americas – TheF2PLoser with Guillotine 2099

Europe & Russia – Fintech with Ghost remained in 1st place

Asia & Oceania – -BR- with She-Hulk kept his spot at the top

Ghost, Guillotine 2099, and a surprise showing by She-Hulk were the ones to top the Leaderboard for this second Qualifier, and as we enter in the last two days for this round, will any other ladies join the fray?

In terms of other competitors that made it to the top ten on the Leaderboard, we did see some familiar names (and familiar Champions) across all three regions.  Satsui No Hadou was in second in the Asia & Oceania region, and ZacTheSword was one of the top ten in the same region after his stint in the lead during the first Qualifier! Cs-89518 was a returning name for the Europe & Russia leaderboard.  Last but not least, Agent ZZZ once again climbed into the top 10 of the Americas leaderboard, followed just behind by a familiar Content Creator face – simula67!

Will we see familiar faces atop the leaderboard once again?  Or will a daring Summoner resting in wait, biding their time, sneak in at the last possible second!

Stay tuned to find out as the Second Round of the 2021 Summoner Showdown Qualifiers continues!

Make sure to stay tuned here for all your news, updates, and announcements regarding this year’s Summoner Showdown!

The Final (but not Semi-Final) Update of the Nameless King Groot Qualifier

August 20th, 2021

Written by: Dragon

Dragon is a MCoC enthusiast, a freelance writer, and, of course, a dragon

Fearless Friday Greetings, Summoners!

For those of you who may be worried that this is the final (but not Semi-Final) update of the Nameless King Groot Leaderboard – fear not!  Since all the Qualifier challenges are running back to back this year – there will be a transition period as we move from Qualifier to Qualifier.  That transition period means that the announcement of the Semi-Finalists from the Nameless King Groot Qualifier (as well as the other two Qualifiers) will happen once they have all concluded and the results have been verified.

However, Summoners might be wondering how they know they have Qualified prior to going into the Nameless Scarlet Witch Qualifier!  If you have Qualified as a Semi-Finalist – Kabam will be in contact by early next week via in-game mail.

With the details out of the way – on to the Leaderboard updates!  Congratulations to the Summoners below who have topped the Gold Difficulty Nameless King Groot Qualifier on Day 3 and Day 4!

Day 3

The Americas – I’m bleh continues to keep the top America spot with Hercules

Europe & Russia – Fintech with Tigra

Asia & Oceania – ZacTheSword keeps the top spot with Hercules

Day 4

The Americas – I’m bleh keeps the top of the Americas leaderboard with Hercules

Europe & Russia – Fintech continues to dominate with Tigra

Asia & Oceania – ZacTheSword remains in the top spot with Hercules

Showing off their dominance, the Leaderboard for Day 4 matches that of the Day 3 Leaderboard, and just how skilled those three Summoners are!  Less than 24 hours remain for any remaining challengers to win their spot as a Semi-Finalist in the 2021 Summoner Showdown!

As we enter the final day for the Nameless King Groot Qualifier, nothing but questions remain.  Will Hercules continue to dominate the leaderboards with that grin and those pecs?  Will Tigra show just how sharp her claws are and sneak up to steal the day?  Or will some other Champion emerge at the final hour in the hands of a skilled Summoner to seize the day?

Only time will tell, Summoners.  Only time will tell.

Make sure to stay tuned here for all your news, updates, and announcements regarding this year’s Summoner Showdown!

The Second Boss Approaches – Nameless Scarlet Witch

August 20th, 2021

Written by: Dragon

Dragon is a MCoC enthusiast, a freelance writer, and, of course, a dragon

With the first round of Qualifiers for the 2021 Summer Showdown about to be in the books (you have until 10am PT on Saturday, August 21st), it is time to move on to introducing the second challenge that Summoners must face.  To become a Summoner Showdown Semi-Finalist, not only will Summoners have to show off their roster flexibility, they will have to defeat the master of chaos magic herself – Nameless Scarlet Witch awaits as the next boss!

For those taking on the Gold Difficulty Nameless Scarlet Witch, they will once again have to meet the following requirements –

  • Complete the fight with a 5-Star Champion
  • Complete the fight within the 10-minute window allowed
  • Achieve the best possible run within seventy attempts

The Buffs

As Summoners discovered in the first round of Qualifiers for the 2021 Summoner Showdown, every Nameless champion will feature Buffs designed to test and push their skills to the limit.  In order to take down the Gold Difficulty Nameless Scarlet Witch and earn a place as a Semi-Finalist, they will have to fight through the following:

  • Fortification
    • While Tech Attackers have an Armor Up Buff, they are immune to Bleed, Poison, and Coldsnap effects. Whenever a Tech Attacker would receive a Debuff they are immune to, they gain a Fury Passive increasing Attack Rating by 20% for 7 second(s).
  • Blood in the Water – 1
    • While the Attacker is suffering from a Debuff, the Defender gains a Passive Fury granting +100% Attack Rating lasting until all Debuffs on the Attacker expire.
  • Special Chaos Inversion
    • The Attacker’s Dash and Dodge controls are inverted from the start of the Defender’s Special Attacks until just after they end.
  • Stun Immunity
    • The Defender is immune to the effects of Stun.
  • Unblockable
    • All of the Defender’s Special Attacks are Unblockable.

Quick Note: This was originally posted with two extra Buffs, but has now been updated to reflect the proper fight. No additional Buffs were added!

In order to defeat the Master of Chaos Magic, Summoners will need to bring their best skills, including ones in reverse, survive Debuffs on their Debuffs, and take down Nameless Scarlet Witch in the fastest possible time to win a spot as a 2021 Summoner Showdown Semi-Finalist!

As always – One Champion.  Ten Minutes.  Seventy attempts.

Which Summoner will be victorious on this second step to the 2021 Summoner Showdown!

Kingly Updates of the Namless King Groot Qualifier

August 18th, 2021

Written by: Dragon

Dragon is a MCoC enthusiast, a freelance writer, and, of course, a dragon

Salutations Summoners!

While some of you may be suffering through a Summer of Pain, for those of you working to take down the Gold Difficulty King Groot Qualifier Challenge – it’s business as usual!  Keeping combos, avoiding hits, channeling your inner speedster, and, if you’re really lucky – all of the above to make the Leaderboard!

Congratulations to the following Summoners who topped the King Groot Gold Qualifier challenge on Day 1 and Day 2 –

Day 1

The Americas – PRODIGYX with She-Hulk

Europe & Russia – cs-89518 with She-Hulk

Asia & Oceania – レジェンドユウとも~1 with Star-Lord

Day 2

The Americas – I’m bleh with Hercules

Europe & Russia – cs-89518 with She-Hulk keeps the spot at the top of the Leaderboard!

Asia & Oceania – ZacTheSword with Hercules

While Hercules has continued to creep over the Leaderboard in all three regions, the first and second day have been filled with a variety of faces!  From the unsuspecting Star-Lord, to She-Hulk, Proxima Midnight, and Human Torch, there is no clear answer to this Qualifier. The determining factor across all of the leaderboards came down to, quite simply, not being hit.  In fact, no one said it quite as well as Kabam Zen – “Quite a few folks with great times, BUT they got hit.”

As a reminder for everyone, any Qualifier runs for the 2021 Summoner Showdown are evaluated in the following order:

  1. Health Remaining on King Groot
  2. Hits Received by Attacker/Summoner
  3. Length of Fight
  4. DPS

So, as Kabam Zen said, the key is to make sure you don’t get hit!

The ability to qualify in King Groot Gold Difficulty will be available until August 21st, 2021, 10am PDT.  The quest will remain open for the remainder of the 2021 Summoner Showdown Qualifiers for anyone wanting to collect an exclusive profile picture.

As always, Summoners, may your fingers be swift, your crits fantastic, and your roster up to the task of this challenge!

The Nameless King Groot Qualifier is Live!

August 16th, 2021

The 2021 Summoner Showdown Qualifiers have begun! Summoners have 70 attempts against Gold Difficulty Nameless King Groot with a 5-Star Champion.

Who will emerge as a Semi-Finalist from each of the three regions?

Keep an eye on @marvelchampions and here for Leaderboard updates over the next five days, and good luck to all Summoners!

Meet Your First Boss – Nameless King Groot

August 13th, 2021

Written by: Dragon

Dragon is a MCoC enthusiast, a freelance writer, and, of course, a dragon

The 2021 Summoner Showdown Champion must not only have the skills required to dominate in Marvel Contest of Champions, they must have the roster.  For those Summoners hoping to become a Summoner Showdown Semi-Finalist, the Gold Difficulty Nameless King Groot will be the first roadblock on that path!

The Requirements

For those taking on the Gold Difficulty Nameless King Groot, they will also have to meet the following requirements –

  • Complete the fight with a 5-Star Champion
  • Complete the fight within the 10-minute window allowed
  • Achieve the best possible run within seventy attempts

The Buffs

Every Summoner hoping to qualify to be the 2021 Summoner Showdown Champion must demonstrate their skills, game knowledge, and roster.  To that effect, they will need to overcome, work around, and with, the following nodes on Nameless King Groot:

  • Ebb and Flow – Intercept
    • The Defender has Protection, reducing all incoming damage by 60%. Intercepting the Defender removes the Protection and grants the Attacker a Precision Passive, increasing Critical Rating by {30%} for 12 second(s). When the Precision expires, the Protection returns, and all Debuffs on the Defender are Purified.
  • Foresight
    • Intercepting the opponent’s Dash Attack with a Basic Attack grants the Attacker a Passive Fury charge, increasing their Attack Rating by 200% for 5 seconds.
  • Encroaching Stun
    • Every 20 seconds the Attacker becomes Stunned for 3 seconds, unless they are performing a Special Attack when the timer expires. During this Stun, the Attacker’s Armor Rating is doubled.
  • Rise to Power – 3
    • When the Defender is knocked down a 4 second timer starts. While active, each time the Defender lands a hit or strikes into the block, they gain 50% of a bar of Power.
  • Divine Barrier – 3
    • While fighting a Mystic Attacker, every 10 second(s) on a timer, the Defender becomes Immune to Nullify, Fateseal and Stagger effects for 10 second(s). The timer’s duration is paused for 2 second(s) each time the Attacker Nullifies a Buff.
  • Stun Immunity
    • The Defender is immune to the effects of Stun.

One more thing Summoners will need to keep in mind for their attempts at Nameless King Groot – while King Groot did receive a Buff in the month of August, Nameless King Groot did not! Summoners will be facing the old kit of King Groot – which can be reviewed in the pre-fight screen.

Summoners will need to be determined, skilled, and intercept even better than a ninja to come through this challenge and win a spot as a 2021 Summoner Showdown Semi-Finalist.

One Champion.  Ten Minutes.  Seventy attempts.
Who will emerge victorious on this first step of the 2021 Summoner Showdown?
